What is maturity? The Google dictionary simply defines it as “the state of being mature”, but is there all there is to it? In my opinion, it is, along with the physical development, the amelioration of one’s emotional and mental ability to think, speak and act their feelings, keeping in mind their bounds of dignity. This article contains two of the most important types of maturity, which are physical and emotional maturity.
Physical maturity is an imperative part of one’s life and it refers to the biological changes that occur in our body. These changes aid in our personal development, as it enhances the physical capacity of our body by augmenting our flexibility, balance, muscle strength, bone strength, etc. It is important to understand that these changes are a part of life and reflecting upon them is indispensable in order to recognize your strengths and certain things/areas you need to work on, with regards to your physical characteristics. When it comes to emotional maturity, it is the complete emotional development of a person, which could also be considered as a sub-division of emotional intelligence.
It is palpably something which cannot be easily defined as everyone has different opinions and thoughts. However, there are multiple factors that can either enhance or perhaps, even diminish a person’s emotional maturity. The best example would be the experiences and the tragedies one has to go through as they can either have a positive or drastic effect on one’s life. People, who are emotionally mature take full responsibility of their actions, are much more likely to find solutions to various situations rather than intensifying it, as well as, they can cope with any criticism directed towards them.
Moreover and more importantly, they are optimistic, positive and honest to themselves and others. Emotional maturity is not when we start speaking big things, however, it is actually when we start understanding small things.
Maturity is something which we students, particularly of this age, can actually relate to. For an individual to be classified as mature or a “teenager”, he or she should make sure that they are physically, emotionally and socially mature. Finally, a true act of maturity is when you care about yourself, life and people.
